Hamamelis

Witch Hazel or Hamamelis are fantastic specimen shrubs for the winter garden. Their spidery flowers are spicily scented in yellows, oranges and reds and are borne on bare stems in January and February.

Although slow growing they will eventually grow to around 2.5 metres tall. An added bonus is their leaves turn a wonderful fiery colour in autumn before they fall.

They prefer neutral to acid soils in sun or partial shade.

Witch Hazel has long been used in medicine to treat skin grazes and insect bites.
